The title "ISLANDS IN FLUX" and the premise are exciting enough to give most readers a reason to buy and read the book. Read on to know more about the book and what I think of it.
What to expect? :
It does not matter which category of readers you belong to, beginners or regulars, you would mostly be getting the new things out of this Book.
Expect a book that gives us an overall picture of the Island with threats to environmental and its own Indigenous Peoples.
Finally, expect a book that focuses on giving practical tips and suggestions on reducing this problems and changes to prevent from vulnerable.
Who can read? :
Since the book is written in an understand language and a good writing style, it can be picked by any beginner level reader. Especially, whose focus on Islands Bright Future.
The book is much more interesting because we get to know multiple points of views and experiences.
What is the book all about? :
"ISLANDS IN FLUX" tells us just how the system and non-tribal poeples dealing with the Islands, it's Native Peoples and Environment.
Basically it is a compilation of Articles and Academics with the author's own thoughts and researches.Statistically , he drawn many timelines and Data which is very informative and elaborating.
A long years of research and knowledge by the Author compiled in this book. As an Islander, I found out that I really didn’t know anything about these factors , incidents which are part of my own born place.
The islands have a history longer than that of British Settlement, there are indigenous people who have own these since 40,000 years ago.Accidentally, for the sake of our benefits and enjoys we endangered these untouched tribes. They are no more listed on isaolated or untouched tribes. He mainly pointed on how we are dealing our infrangible islands.
He mentioned, how despite the authorities and political party announces the development projects starting with enthusiasts, but unaware of the resultant.Mainly, illuminated various issues pertaining to the islands.
Book divided into chapters which in turn are very easy to navigate through. Complementing his thoughts and narratives are interviews from many other activists from across the islands who are fighting a similar war.
Some Environmentalists and Well-wishers of tribes are still seeking for that ray of hope from our government promised.
About the author :
Pankaj Sekhsaria is a Researcher, Writer, also a member of the environmental action group, Kalpavriksh where he works on issues of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
He has spent several years researching in Andaman and Nicobar Islands mainly focus on Environmental & Tribal related issues.
Is the book interesting to read? :
I think the subject itself (Andaman Nicobar Islands) is so vastly beautiful and diverse that the reader is bound to turn pages after pages just to get a glimpse of what lies ahead in the author’s views and researches.
Let’s talk about the research gone into the book :
Though the book makes use of a lot of statistics, in the end, it is a basic research-oriented book. It is a book meant for beginners. The author also lists some other papers, blogs, and articles that the reader can consult for much detailed information.
Conclusion :
Overall this book is well compiled, Informative and tells us the other side of truth that we are totally unaware of. This compilation aims to educate and inform readers of the history, geology and ecology of the Andaman Nicobar Islands. This book puts a counter narrative to the modern society. The view of seeing my islands changed after reading it. Lastly, this book tells the frighten side of these Islands ands it's native peoples, which left me tremble.
